// General

Many young scientists not only want to take on leadership roles following their doctorate, they also gain their first experience of this during their doctoral work. It therefore makes sense to look at how to obtain a leadership position and fill it well.

// Content and Topics

What actually makes a good leader – what are the expectations of this role? How can I combine goal orientation with people orientation? What skills do I have for this role and how can I convince other people of my skills? The first day of the workshop will also address how to get off to a good start in the new position.
Leadership succeeds (or fails) primarily through communication. The challenges associated with successful communication and how the repertoire of appropriate communication in leadership situations can be significantly expanded will be reflected and practiced on the second workshop day. Typical differences in communication styles between men and women, different cultures and contexts will be addressed, as well as individual differences and their impact on conversation in dialogue and in the group.

Day 1 (19 October, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm)

  • Expectations of different stakeholders from the leadership
  • Task vs. people orientation – indications, advantages and disadvantages
  • Own experiences in (in)formal leadership roles
  • Convincing communication of own competencies
  • Successful start in the leadership role
  • Motivation – theory and practice
  • Dealing with different employees

Day 2 (26 October, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm)

  • Leadership styles
  • Decision making in the team
  • Communication on different levels, identification of the individually preferred style
  • Differences in communication depending on gender and culture
  • Delegation
  • Giving feedback: praising and confronting
  • Transfer

A transfer assignment will be given between the two workshop days.
