Communication and Dynamics of Plant Cell Compartments

01 Jul// Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften

On Friday, 01 July 2022, the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” took place in Halle. This annual event was paused for two years and revived in 2022 with a great program involving all research institutions of the city.

Our RTG members also contributed to the event with lectures, posters as well as with demonstrations and hand-on experiments on “How to understand plants at cellular level”. PhD students and PIs were involved in organizing the program and implemented their ideas to bring the research interest of our RTG to the public.

From 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm a lot of interested people of all ages visited us in the building of Inst. of Biochemistry & Biotechnology, Kurt-Mothes-Str. 3. They enjoyed, among other things, the lectures on “Molecular plant research at the borders of understanding” and “How fluorescent proteins show researchers the way in the dark”. Especially for the kids it was amazing to see the colorful conversion of Anthocyanin of red cabbage in a pH shift, to explore the diversity of plant pigments separated in a chromatography or to investigate the principle of a gel electrophoresis. They tested their knowledge in a “plant science challenge” and received a certificate for completing the entertaining tasks.

All in all, it was a great evening and we look forward to contributing to LNdW 2023 again next year.

Lennart and Minh are demonstrating how a gel electrophoresis is working.
