“How is mitochondrial lipid transport regulated in response to phosphate starvation in Arabidopsis thaliana?“ by Morgane Michaud (CEA Grenoble, Cell & Plant Physiology Laboratory, France)
Mitochondrial membranes are composed of a specific assembly of lipidsand proteins that is essential for their proper biogenesis and function. Littleis known about the regulation of mitochondrial lipid homeostasis in plants. Inaddition, mitochondrial lipid composition can be dramatically altered inresponse to stress, such as phosphate (Pi) starvation, where phospholipids, themajor constituents of mitochondrial membranes, are partially degraded torelease Pi, and replaced by galactolipids synthesized in plastids. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the number ofcontact sites between plastids and mitochondria increases during Pi starvation, suggesting that lipid transfer occurs by non-vesicular routes. However, verylittle is known about the actors involved in the regulation of mitochondriallipid remodeling in response to Pi starvation. During this seminar, I willprovide an overview of what we currently know about non-vesicular lipidtransport and I will present the strategy we use in our laboratory to studythis process in plants by focusing on one key protein: AtVPS13M1.
